MID-CONGRESS TOURS

Back Home

On Wednesday 28th registered delegates (including student and accompanying persons) will be able to go on one of the thirteen different mid-congress tours. All tours will depart from Nairobi at a central place.

In the evening all delegates will be bused back to Nairobi for the cultural night, including dinner at Bomas of Kenya.

When registering for the Congress, you will select which Mid-Congress Tour you want to be on. We advise that you register early if there is a particular tour that you want to be on. 

All tours depart at 06:00 am in the morning.  A detailed overview of the Mid-Congress tours will be available soon.

Route 1 : Nairobi - Naivasha

RIFT-VALLEY VIEW POINT

Route 2 : Nairobi - Nairobi National Park

Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya. 

The Nairobi National Park - "The World's only Wildlife Capital" - was established in 1946 and is approximately 8 Km from the Nairobi City Center Business District.

Game drive - appreciate the Savannah ecosystem; see variety of wildlife including lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes; appreciate impact of the expansion of Nairobi City on the status of the national park; Wildlife Conservation Education Centre - lectures and video about wildlife; Safari Walk - highlights the variety of plants and animals native to Kenya, and their benefit to the country's population.

ANIMAL ORPHANAGE 

Animal Orphanage, founded in 1963 with the purpose of saving orphaned elephants and rhinos and releasing them back into the wild.

Route 3 : Nairobi - ILRI Campus Kiambu

The group will be divided into two. 
First group will visit - GITHUNGURI DAIRIES

Successful dairy cooperative movement; market for small scale milk producers; started with 31 small scale farmers in 1961, has since grown to over 23,000 small scale farmers in membership; invest in capacity building of its members on dairy production and product management; processing milk and supplies most parts of the country.

Route 4 : Nairobi - Machakos Ranch

Machakos ranch 
(private ranch)

The private ranch raises cattle and sheep on 15,000 acres of Savanna grassland; livestock-wildlife integration and inherent challenges. Cattle breeds kept are Boran and Sahiwal.

The sheep breed kept are pure dorpers. The animals are grazed on natural pasture, though hay is also used during dry season. Wildlife species within the ranch include wildebeests, antelopes, gazelle and hyena.

Kekenyoike pasture production and slaughter house (green production)
The group will visit a Maasai clan that has integrated pasture production, beef production and marketing.

The group runs a slaughter house which uses green energy and are now packing and retailing biogas from the slaughter waste.




The undulating landscapes behind the hill is surreal and dotted with authentic Maasai homesteads. The layout of a Maasai village is also unique in that the houses are lined in a circular pattern with the cows shed in the middle.

The homestead is surrounded with a thorn fence as well as the cow pen to keep the lions away from their livestock. You will learn how the Maasai throw their clubs, make fire without match sticks and traditional archery.

Makasa Dairy farm

The farmer keeps a herd of Fleckvieh dairy cattle and Fleckvieh x Sahiwal crosses. He sells the milk locally at Makasa dairy outlet in Emali town along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

DEL MONTE FACTORY

Del Monte Kenya owns over 10,000-acre (40 km?) pineapple plantation and employs approximately 6,000 workers. Approximately 60% of the workforce is female (estimate).

LORD EGERTON CASTLE

Based on a 100-acre portion of land. Lord Egerton built the castle in 1938 and completed it in 1954.

Lord Egerton built the castle for his bride to be after his fianc?e turned down his wedding proposal arguing that the house (a six bedroom house) was as small as a chicken cage. Lord Egerton was so heart-broken to extent he never married nor wanted to see any other lady. He went ahead and banned all ladies to his property.
The castle was constructed using imported materials and some local material from Njiru and Kedowa. Tiles and marble was imported from England and Italy. He used Indian workers to construct the castle. Lord Ergeton rested in 1958. Set in a pre-colonial farming within a small scale mixed dairy farming.
